StewMac Safe Slot Nut Guard

About This Item

Stop your file before the slot’s too deep!

Cutting string slots is delicate: if you cut one slot a little too low, you've blown the nut and have to start over. StewMac's own Don MacRostie devised the Safe Slot™ to make accurate nut slotting fast and fumble-free. He shows us how it's done in the video!

A trick the pros use:
Stack feeler gauges against the nut to set your slot depth. When the slotting saw touches the feeler gauges, you've hit your depth. The Safe Slot Nut Guard holds the feeler gauges tightly against the nut, and curved to the radius of your fingerboard. This leaves both hands free for filing. You're able to work faster without worrying about cutting too deep.

  • Holds multiple feeler gauges
  • Pulls gauges tight to match fretboard radius
  • Locks in place against the nut. No slipping!

Perfect string spacing without math
For good playing feel, don't use equal spaces between the strings. Wound strings are thicker, so they need more space than thinner treble strings. In fact, every string space needs to be a little different to feel right in the player's hand.

This set includes tapered wedges for both electric and acoustic guitars to mark out your trim line and a slim version of our String Spacing Rule to show where to put your string slots. Slide it into the Safe Slot, same as a feeler gauge, and see exactly where each string belongs. No measuring, dividing or calculating. Replace the rule with your feeler gauges and you're ready to cut nut slots. Thanks to luthier Ron Baran for the idea of adding this slim spacing rule to the set.

The Safe Slot's felt-padded caul adapts to most neck shapes, and any fingerboard width up to 2-1/16".

Safe Slot Nut Guard

This little tool allows me to get aggressive when making nut slots and eliminates the concern about cutting just a little bit too deep. It also eliminates the constant checking especially when getting close to the proper string/fret gap. A great time saver.

Game Changer

By

Verified Buyer

This tool gives a beginning guitar tech “wanna be” the ability to make a decent bone nut from a blank. Instead of constant paranoia about a slot that is too low, you can work on creating properly shaped slots with a clear front takeoff point and ramp. The screw is definitely finicky which is the only apparent defect I can find. Overall a great tool created by a Lutherie genius.

Useless for a guitar with a volute

By

Verified Buyer

2 of my electrics have a volute in their neck, which makes this tool useless to fix the feeler gauges flush on the fretboard. I didn't read any caution about this detail on the item description. I should have gone with the nut slotting gauge instead

Response from StewMac

We stand behind our return policy -- if you are not satisfied with a product you may return it for a refund or exchange. We look forward to helping you with this.

Quick accurate setup.

Should have had this tool years ago. The time I save and accurately doing it right the first time paid for the kit in three setups. Outstanding and a must have.

LOVE -  But one note of warning!

By

Verified Buyer

I seriously love this thing. But be careful not to over-tighten the neck caul when bending feeler gauges to match neck radius. Over-tightening (and it's 'very' easy to do) will cause a hump at the middle and completely negate the tool's purpose. Trust me, it's very easy to make this mistake without realizing it.

Thicker headstalk

Having to learn how to use and get it right. Some necks are beefier toward the headstalk. Not as easy to use as I thought.

String spacing ruler

By

Verified Buyer

I bought the string spacing ruler only, Im going to buy the guard that goes under the neck to hold the ruler, I figured I wouldnt need it but its a pain to hold the ruler & try to mark the nut, but I like the ruler it beats me trying to guess at the spacing

Worth every penny

This is one of those "why didn't I think of this" tools. A must have even for the non-luthiers who have to slut nuts every once in a while.
Saves lots of time and back and forth, precise.
Definitely a must!

Safe Slot Nut Guard

Great idea and good for a safe start. Fret height is the true definer here. If thats not right (fret height definition too low) you got problems for the beginner. You would be wise in purchasing gauged nut saws to save file wear and breakage. Otherwise if you top the nut height right you won't have to go so deep with files. Well made as everything this company makes is. I'm still deciding on it. Don't get me wrong, Stew-mac is a guitar tech's heaven, I love tools and especially ones that speed-up work and raise quality. Thanks for the forum!
